“Men of the Cloth” Documentary Screening

The Honorable Willie Brown will accept the honor in memory of Wilkes Bashford. Complimentary tickets for the film are distributed starting at 5:45 pm at the Koret Auditorium entrance. Men of the Cloth is an inspiring portrait of three humble and accomplished Italian master tailors whose work exudes elegance and style. The film gives us a window into the past, present, and future of custom tailoring, a craft whose roots are in the Renaissance but whose branches extend from small towns in the Apennine Mountains of Italy and the outskirts of Palermo, Sicily, all the way to New York’s Madison Avenue and the suburbs of Philadelphia. Now in the twilight of their career, artisans Nino Corvato, Checchino Fonticoli, and Joe Centofanti have a passionate devotion to their old world craft. As they confront the decline of the apprentice system, they fear that their knowledge will vanish with them. Joe Genuardi, a tailoring apprentice, reflects on the resurgence of popular interest in artisanal craftsmanship as an alternative to corporate mass production, providing hope for the future of this craft.
Men of the Cloth premiered at DOC NYC, the largest documentary film festival in America, and was an Audience Favorite at the Three Rivers Film Festival in Pittsburgh. It has screened at arthouse cinemas and museums across North America, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Phoenix Art Museum, and the George Eastman Museum in Rochester, NY. Mens’ lifestyle magazine A & H called the film “dynamic, emotional, and inspiring! A captivating tale of an art in both remission and resurgence, Men of the Cloth is a journey across the globe unifying craftsmanship and style.” Arts Fuse called the film is “a deeply moving narrative, a story that is filled with a deep lust for life.”

Director/Producer Vicki Vasilopoulos was the Senior Fashion Editor at DNR (now a part of WWD), the men’s newsmagazine where she styled and produced photo layouts, reviewed designer runway shows, and wrote fashion feature stories. As a freelance writer Vicki has contributed to People magazine andFashion Wire Daily (an international newswire service) and has had features published in The New York Times, Esquire, and Time Out New York. Vicki served as a film series programmer for New York Women in Film and Television. She is a member of the International Documentary Association, the Independent Filmmaker Project, and the American Society of Journalists and Authors. She is a native of Greece and spent her formative years in New York City. She has a B.A. in Journalism from New York University, and has also studied at The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and the Paris Fashion Institute in France.
