Curator-led Tour of Material Domestications at the Museum of Craft and Design

The Material Domestication exhibition, at the Museum of Craft and Design, will feature the work of six contemporary artists who utilize disparate cultural backgrounds as a framework for sculptural explorations invested in skill, material and identity. This exhibition is an investigation of materiality and technique based on slow production and repetitive making. These practices are often rooted in the notion of craft as women’s work. Typical processes include needlework, knitting, weaving and other historical fiber-based techniques. Modular components are stacked, folded, knitted or woven into existence by these artists. The exhibition opens on March 16, 2019.
Curator Elizabeth Kozlowski will lead a group of TAC members through this exciting exhibit. The group will adjourn to a nearby restaurant for a no host lunch and continued conversation. Combining her passion for textiles and contemporary scholarship, Independent Curator Elizabeth Kozlowski has joined the Surface Design Association as Editor for the quarterly journal, Surface Design. Her current project Craft as Social Practice, aims to create real-time social change within the state of Florida. Members of the Socially Engaged Craft Collective form a timely exhibition that demonstrates the power of community and contemporary craft practice. This exhibition will debut at the Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts, Tallahassee, in 2018.
Kozlowski has been awarded numerous curatorial residencies and travel grants including the 2018 Creative New Zealand Cultural Exchange Grant; the 2017 Windgate ITE Scholar-in-Residence at the Center for Art and Wood, Philadelphia; and the Danish Arts Foundation International Research Grant in 2015 and 2017 respectively. Kozlowski has a M.A. with Honors in Museum Studies from Arizona State University and a B.F.A. in studio art awarded by Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton. She is currently a doctoral candidate in Cultural Anthropology at Tulane University, New Orleans.
