Travel to Indonesia 2018

Indonesia Adventure

July 12-23, 2018

Indonesia is a nation of more than 13,000 islands and 300 ethnic groups with the Javanese making up more than 40% of the 260 million population. The core of Indonesian culture can be found in Java and Sumatra. The West Java region is home to the ancient royal courts of Yogyakarta and Surakarta, renowned centers of education, classical Javanese fine art and intricately patterned batiks as well as architectural treasures such as the early 9th Century Buddhist stupa Borobudur, one of the largest religious monuments in the world, and the late 9th Century Hindu temple complex of Prembanan. Our tour will begin in Yogyakarta.

On the north coast of Java, Pekalongan, Cirebon and Indramayu are renowned for their pasisir style of batik patterning reflecting the multicultural influences found in this region, a confluence of Sundanese and Javanese with a strong presence of Chinese and Europeans who came to this region centuries ago.

On this tour we will have an opportunity to meet batik artists and visit their workshops as well as explore historic sites, museums and markets. The tour will end in Jakarta with a visit to the highly regarded National Museum and Textile Museum as well as visits to renowned galleries and collections. Tour Extension: Sumatra, known in ancient times as Swarnabhumi or land of gold, has been open to outside influences for thousands of years, reflecting its proximity to the Indian Ocean and South China Sea, affording easy access to Indian, Arab and Chinese traders whose influences are reflected in the textiles found here. There are a number of ethnic groups found on this large island, most notably the Minangkabau and Batak, both of whom continue to weave and use traditional textiles. We will drive north from Padang, stopping in the heartland of the Minangkabau, the Bukit Tinggi region, and Lake Toba, the ancestral home of the Batak. The tour will end in Medan.
