Ultracontemporary Fashion

Fashion historian Dennita Sewell will lead a discussion about collecting and exhibiting contemporary fashion in an art museum. In her role as Curator of Fashion at Phoenix Art Museum, Sewell recently purchased several works for the permanent collection that were also on view in an exhibition called Ultracontemporary. This lecture goes on the journey of through the process of selecting works among a diverse range of choices.
Dennita Sewell is Professor of Practice at Arizona State University where she is heading up a new Fashion BA course in the School of Art. For almost 20 years, she was Curator of Fashion Design at Phoenix Art Museum. She received her MFA in Design from the Yale School of Drama and BA in Textile and Apparel Management from the University of Missouri. Prior to Phoenix, Sewell was Collections Manager at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. At Phoenix Art Museum she organized more than 50 exhibitions on topics ranging from motorcycle jackets to historical and contemporary designers drawn from the Museum’s comprehensive collection, international fashion houses and private collections. Publications include Extending the Runway: Tatiana Sorokko Style, Fashion Independent: The Original Style of Ann Bonfoey Taylor.
